PRIME – Aquarium Conditioner
By Seachem
PRIME – Aquarium Conditioner. By Seachem. The complete and concentrated conditioner for freshwater and saltwater aquariums. Prime® takes out chlorine, chloramine and it detoxifies ammonia. This product also changes ammonia into a safe, non-toxic form that is removed by the tank’s bio filter.
Prime® may be used during tank cycling to relieve toxicity of ammonia/nitrite. Prime® detoxifies nitrite and nitrate, allowing the bio filter to efficiently remove them. Additionally, Prime detoxifies heavy metals found in your tap water at typical concentration levels. Prime® is non-acidic and doesn’t impact pH levels or over activate skimmers. Use when starting up a tank and whenever adding or replacing your aquarium water.
When transporting or quarantining fish, it is recommended to use Seachem StressGuard™. When you are adding new fish to a tank, use Stability®. Both of these products are ideal to use with Prime®.
Most companies manufacture a product that removes the chlorine. None of those products can compare to the quality, concentration, or effectiveness to Seachem’s product Prime®. Prime® is the second most concentrated dechlorinator on the market. One 100 mL bottle will treat 1000 US gallons of tap water. Prime® will remove both chlorine and chloramines from municipal water supplies.
Prime® contains a binder which makes ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate non-toxic. It is very important to understand and know how those two functions work together. All dechlorinators work through a chemical process known as reduction. During this process, toxic dissolved chlorine gas is changed into non-toxic chloride ions. The reduction process also breaks the bonds between chlorine and nitrogen atoms in the chloramine molecule, freeing the chlorine atoms and replacing them with hydrogen (H) to create ammonia.
Typically, dechlorinators stop there, leaving an aquarium full of toxic ammonia! Seachem takes the necessary next step by including an ammonia binder to detoxify the ammonia produced in the reduction process.
Be very careful when purchasing water conditioners. If your municipality includes chloramines in the water supplies, a standard sodium thiosulfate dechlorinator is not enough. Prime® promotes the natural production and restoration of the slime coat rather than relying on artificial or non-native slime compounds. A further bonus for the reef hobbyist—Prime® will not overactivate protein skimmers.
Directions:
- 1 capful to every 200 L (50 US gallons) of new water
- Each cap thread is approximately 1 mL
- Each capful is 5mL
- Read instructions carefully
- Recommended to add to new water first not directly into the aquarium
- Base dose on size of aquarium if adding directly
- Normal sulphur odor
- If really high chloramine concentrations present, a double dose may be used safely
- In an emergency, you can detoxify nitrite by dosing up to 5 times normal dose
- It is recommended to use a half dose where temperatures read higher than 30°C (86°F) and where chlorine or ammonia levels are low
